Book of Dead Slot Review
SlotTribe 250 Spin Test – Date: 9 June 2026 – Result: +62.50 – Bonuses: 4 – Biggest Win: 88x
Overview
Book of Dead is the original modern classic — the slot that turned casual players into proper slot fans and set the standard for every “Book” game that followed. Released on 14 January 2016 by Play’n GO, it’s simple, clean, nostalgic, and still one of the most played slots in the world. The entire game revolves around the Expanding Symbol mechanic, a feature so iconic that dozens of providers have copied it since.
The slot plays on a 5×3 grid with 10 paylines and uses high volatility to deliver those trademark “one spin can change everything” moments. Three books trigger the bonus, one symbol is chosen, and if it expands, it pays — no gimmicks, no distractions, just pure slot fundamentals done perfectly. Even after thousands of spins, Book of Dead still hits with that same excitement it had on day one.

Mick’s Take
A nice session on my not‑so‑trusty favourite. Hit the bonus 4 times — first one landed on spin 75 for a 57x, quickly followed by it dropping again on spin 83, this time it also gave me the repeater for a total 88x. So off to a flyer in the first 100 spins. Bonus was not finished there either, hit again on spin 173 for 20x and again on spin 188 for 26x. Lovely to play when the bonus is hitting regular.

Gameplay & Features
Base Game
Book of Dead keeps things simple:
- 10 paylines
- High volatility
- Books act as both Wild and Scatter
- Steady base game with occasional mid‑range wins
The base game isn’t flashy, but it’s consistent. You’re mainly waiting for the bonus, but the odd 20x–40x hit keeps the balance alive.
Bonus Game – Expanding Symbol
Three books trigger 10 free spins. Before the bonus begins, one symbol is randomly chosen to act as the Special Expanding Symbol.
How it works:
- After regular wins are counted, the chosen symbol may expand
- Expanded symbols cover the entire reel
- Expanded symbols do not need to be adjacent
- This allows full‑screen wins
- Retriggers award +10 spins
This mechanic is the heart of the slot. When you land a premium symbol — especially the Explorer — the bonus can go absolutely mental.
Retriggers
Landing three more books during the bonus awards 10 additional spins. Multiple retriggers are possible, and long bonuses are where the slot’s full potential shines.
Theme & Style
Classic Egyptian adventure with Rich Wilde leading the charge. The visuals are simple but iconic — golden temples, ancient symbols, and that familiar Book scatter. The soundtrack is subtle, atmospheric, and instantly recognisable. It’s old‑school Play’n GO charm at its best.
Volatility & Behaviour
Book of Dead is high volatility:
- Bonuses can pay nothing
- Bonuses can pay hundreds
- Base game can be dry
- One good expanding spin can save the session
It’s swingy, unpredictable, and perfect for players who enjoy risk.
Graphics & Sound
Clean, crisp, and timeless. It’s not flashy by modern standards, but it doesn’t need to be. The animations are smooth, the symbols are sharp, and the audio fits the theme perfectly.

SlotTribe Verdict
Book of Dead isn’t just a slot — it’s history. It’s the foundation of modern online slots and still delivers that classic expanding‑symbol excitement better than most newer releases. Our 250‑spin test showed exactly why people love it: regular bonuses, decent wins, and that familiar thrill when the chosen symbol expands. Whether you’re new or experienced, it’s always worth a spin.
